Nicolai Fechin (Nikolai Ivanovich Feshin; 1881–1955) was a distinguished Russian-American painter celebrated for his vivid portraits and evocative depictions of Native Americans. An accomplished graduate of the Imperial Academy of Arts, Fechin initially taught and painted in Kazan before exhibiting his work in the United States in 1910. Following his immigration to New York in 1923, he relocated to Taos, New Mexico, for health reasons. There, he embraced the local landscape and cultures, crafting an adobe home that now houses the Taos Art Museum. His legacy lives on in this historic house, recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. After leaving Taos in 1933, Fechin settled in southern California, leaving behind a rich artistic heritage.
