Nikolay Alekseyevich Kasatkin (1859–1930) was a prominent Russian painter renowned for his contributions to Social Realism. Graduating from the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture in 1883 under the mentorship of Vasily Perov and Illarion Pryanishnikov, he garnered recognition early on, earning a medal for his notable work "Beggars at the Church Door." Kasatkin's career encompassed diverse roles, from teaching at his alma mater to collaborating with Ivan Sytin on illustrations for popular almanacs. His involvement with the Peredvizhniki movement and membership in the Imperial Academy of Arts underscored his influence within the artistic community. Notably, Kasatkin's artistic endeavors extended beyond Russia; he participated in international exhibitions, earning accolades such as a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle (1900). A pivotal figure in the era's artistic and political landscape, Kasatkin's legacy endures as a pioneer of Socialist Realism, earning him posthumous recognition and commemoration in the Soviet Union, including a commemorative postage stamp and the naming of a Moscow street in his honor.
