As an eminent portrait painter, Dmitry Grigoryevich Levitzky (1735–1822) bridged Ukrainian and Russian artistic traditions with his evocative works. Born in Kyiv and later advancing under Aleksey Antropov in Saint Petersburg, Levitzky gained prominence after his 1770 exhibition at the Imperial Academy of Arts. Best known for his portraits of the Smolny Institute's pupils commissioned by Catherine the Great, his works are celebrated for their cultural depth and sensitivity. Despite his acclaim, Levitzky's life was marked by financial struggles, culminating in poverty. His legacy, however, persists in the richness of his portraiture and his influence on artists like Vladimir Borovikovsky.
