Nikolay Pavlovich Shlein (Schlein), 1873−1952, born in 1873 in Kostroma to a middle-class family, pursued his passion for art against his father's initial wishes. After a challenging start in Moscow, Shlain excelled at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture under V. A. Serov's mentorship, and later at the Academy of Fine Arts with Vladimir Makovsky. Graduating in 1903 with honors, he studied abroad before establishing an art studio in Kostroma in 1905, which evolved into an art college post-revolution, with Shlein at its helm for life. His contributions to art, encompassing portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes, are recognized in Russian museums and the State Museum of Sweden. Shlain's journey from struggling student to celebrated artist and educator highlights his significant role in Russian art history before passing away in 1952.
