Item #877

A small archive attributed to Gregory M. Peterman, a contributor to the Na Smenu! (On Duty!) newspaper and Executive Secretary of several other newspapers, including the daily Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda (Komsomol Truth). The collection comprises one newspaper issue, a letter penned by Peterman, five letters enclosed in envelopes, four postcards addressed to Peterman, a document, a brief handwritten biographical note, and thirteen photographs (in various formats).

Na Smenu! was a Soviet and Russian student newspaper in circulation from 1921 to 2009, with a hiatus during the 1940s. Operating from Yekaterinburg, it played a significant role in the local proletarian writers' group of the same name during the 1920s, often seeking their counsel on editorial matters. The publication was known for its vigorous advocacy of atheism and communism during this period. In 1929-1930, the writers' group underwent purges to remove dissenting voices. Throughout its existence, Na Smenu! actively promoted industrialization and organized socialist initiatives.

Following the Great Patriotic War (1941–1945), Na Smenu! emerged as a prominent Komsomol publication, embodying exemplary standards. It served as a training ground for journalism students and was instrumental in disseminating Komsomol's annual report, "Lenin's Ladder," which detailed its accomplishments. Additionally, the newspaper covered a wide range of topics, including articles on blue-collar workers, environmental issues, humor, and sports.
