Crafted within a German DP camp for Ukrainian refugees during 1947-1948, "Day of Wrath" stands as a Ukrainian literary masterpiece penned by the talented emigre writer Yuri Kosach (1908-1990), who happened to be the nephew of Lesya Ukrainka. Immersed in the backdrop of the Khmelnytsky Uprising, this novel offers a compelling fictional portrayal of the tumultuous era. Kosach's adept narrative skillfully captures the essence of the nationwide rebellion led by Hetman Bohdan-Zynoviy Khmelnytsky in 1648, providing readers with a vivid and immersive experience of the historical events.

Yurii Kosach (1908–1990), known under various pseudonyms including Ya. Kosarych, H. Roslavets, and A. Zhorianych, was a prominent Ukrainian poet, writer, and dramatist, notable for his extensive literary contributions and controversial political views. Born in Volhynia, he pursued a prolific career marked by significant events such as imprisonment by Polish authorities for his nationalist activities and subsequent emigration to Paris before the outbreak of World War II. Kosach's literary oeuvre, spanning historical novellas, short stories, novels, and plays, captures the essence of Ukrainian culture and history. Other notable works include "Chorna pani" (The Lady in Black), "Charivna Ukraina" (Enchanting Ukraine), and "Suziria Lebedia" (The Constellation Cygnus). Despite a shift towards socialist realism in his later works and publications in Soviet Ukraine, Kosach's literary legacy endures as a significant contribution to Ukrainian literature.
