The novella "Morituri," authored by the Ukrainian poet, prose writer, and political figure Ivan Bahrianyi (1906–1963), sheds light on the harrowing experiences of prisoners in Stalinist prisons. Despite enduring Stalinist repression himself, Bahriany's literary contributions remain relatively obscure in his homeland. "Morituri," presumably, published in 1947 by the DP publishing house "Prometheus," is part of the author's autobiographical collection, delving into themes of imprisonment and the Gulag system. Often regarded as a precursor to his novel "Gethsemane Garden," this work captures the essence of Bahriany's poignant narrative style.
"Morituri" is a Latin word that translates to "those who are about to die" in English.
