Augsburg: [Vyd-vo TPN OUN], 1949. Original illustrated wrappers. Item #792

Book measures: 21 cm. 192 pages: illustrations, music. Text in Ukrainian. A copy in fair condition, featuring tape restoration on the wrappers along the spine, wear to the wrappers and chipping throughout. There are ink stains present on the lower edges of pages 84 through 140.

This book is a reproduction of the 1946 abridged underground edition, which was unofficially published by the revolutionary Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) in Ukraine. Its content remains entirely unchanged from the 1946 edition, and it now includes photographs that were originally omitted from the mimeographed publication due to technical and covert considerations. Moreover, the appendix features reproductions of the original cover and title page. This remarkable collection, among other valuable materials, was entrusted to the publisher by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army fighters who arrived at a displaced persons (DP) camp in the Western Zones of Germany during the summer of 1947.

The Ukrainian Insurgent Army (known as UPA) was a paramilitary and partisan organization of Ukrainian nationalists, established by the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) on October 14, 1942. Throughout World War II, it conducted guerrilla operations against the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, as well as against the Polish Underground State and Communist Poland.

Books published by Ukrainian refugees for the Displaced Persons (DP) camps in post-war Germany are noteworthy, especially given the challenging camp conditions characterized by resource scarcity and military censorship.
