The content for this catalog is sourced from Lunacharsky's "Ob Izobrazitelnom iskusstve" [About Fine Arts], volume 2, pages 256-258. Here is an excerpt from it: “Koltsov, the artist, embarked on a journey abroad, with Paris as his primary residence and focus of his observations. Yet, as you peruse his exhibition of works brought back from there and contemplate life as he saw it, you may find yourself surprised. What you'll encounter is a Paris far removed from the glamorous, youthful, and gallant image often associated with the city. While such a Paris undoubtedly exists, it held no interest for the artist. His Paris is, in essence, a somber metropolis—a city of laborers, the unemployed, prostitutes, and the police. Koltsov excelled at capturing the distinctive outlines of a Parisian street. Anyone who retains these features in their memory will immediately recognize them in the artist's sketches and vibrant compositions... Koltsov is a truly unique artist. He possesses his own identity, makes his own choices, and follows his own path. Whether you admire his work or not, you can never deny encountering a distinctive artistic personality.”.
