An essay devoted to criticism of the open letter of the dissident writer A. Solzhenitsyn to Soviet leaders, sent on September 5, 1973, in which he called for abandoning communist ideology and taking steps to transform the USSR into a Russian national state. Soon after Solzhenitsyn's expulsion from the USSR, a letter to the "Leaders of the Soviet Union" was published abroad. In the first chapters of the "Letter," Solzhenitsyn describes the two main dangers facing the country at this historical moment: war with China and environmental disaster, "death in the cramped conditions and stench of a polluted Earth." In his opinion, the way out would be to shift the view from external tasks to internal ones, to abandon external expansion and imperial ideology in favor of the country's internal development.
