Collection of Twenty-Four Photographs. House of Romanov

Saint Petersburg: 1898. Fair. Item #34

A large photograph. Nicholas and Alexandra take a walk in the woods, 1898. He's got a camera in his Hand. Dimension: 22.5 x 17 cm.

A set of twenty-three photographs. This set of photographs of the Romanov family in military, processional and family settings was taken by Alexander Alexandrovich NASVETEVICH (1837-1911), general in the Chasseurs of the Imperial Life Guard, adjutant to Tsar Alexander II, and fencing instructor to Alexander III, when he was tsarevich. In his later years, Nasvetevich took up photography, with a darkroom and lab at his dacha on Kammeny Island near Saint Petersburg. He had permission to photography the Imperial family in various public and private settings, and a few small albums in Russian state collections give the impression that he was something of an unofficial family photographer.

Dimensions: 11 x 16.6 cm, 13 x 18 cm. Three photographs are mounted on boards. All have a rubber stamp signature "Ал. Насветевичъ" on the reverse, and 21 have hand-written captions of the reverse, three in French, the remainder in Russian, all in the same hand, presumably his, as one of them is apparently signed.

Scenes include:

Nicholas II at two military reviews, 1899 and 1900
Six photos of funerals, including two showing Nicholas II emerging from the Polish Roman Catholic Church of St. Catherine in St. Petersburg.
Alexandra in her carriage leaving a visit to the Metropolitan of Moscow, April 10. 1900
Alexandra and her entourage in the woods, probably at Tsarskoe Selo, May 1899.

The launching of the cruiser Aurora, May 11, 1900.
Two views of the central hall of the Stieglitz Museum of Decorative and Applied Arts, St. Petersburg, May 1899. One includes an exhibit of work by French photographer Nadar.

Seven assorted views, including two of the Pushkin bust by Ivan Schroder, erected 1899 at Alexander Lyceum. One may include Nicholas II.
A portrait of Nasvetevich in full uniform (not captioned but comparison to known photos confirm it's him).
