Paris: YMCA Press, 1973. First Edition. Original pictorial wrappers. Item #321

First Russian edition of the Nobel Prize-winning author’s masterwork, preceding the English translation. Seven parts in three volumes. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers as issued. A very good set with little foxing and wear to the covers and text blocks.

Written in a tone that encompasses Olympian wrath, bitter calm, savage irony and sheer comedy, it combines history, autobiography, documentary and political analysis as it examines in its totality the Soviet apparatus of repression from its inception following the October Revolution of 1917. Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 best non-fiction books of the twentieth century. It placed number three on the 100 best non-fiction books of the twentieth century by National Review magazine.
