Ielysei Karpenko - a Ukrainian writer, actor, theatrical figure in the USA - playwright, director. He wrote more many plays, but Zemlia [The Land] was the most popular, embodying the peasant's eternal desire for land and freedom. A mythological image of the land as a universal embodiment of motherhood and protection, as well as cruel all-consuming force that requires sacrifice from a person.
