Lviv: Nakladom Vydavnychoi Kooperatyvy "Chervona Kalyna", 1938 [dated 1939 on wrapper]. Illustrated throughout with photographic plates, portraits, facsimiles, and in-text reproductions. Original publisher's red-and-black pictorial paper wrappers with woodcut cover illustration by Mykola Butovych. From the personal library of Ukrainian-Canadian scholar and community leader Dmytro Fodchuk, with his ink ownership stamp ("D. Fodchuk / TORONTO, ONTARIO") to the title page. Wrappers lightly age-toned along extremities, with minor chipping at the top outer corner of the front cover and small closed tears to the spine ends; front wrapper is detached from the block; rear wrapper intact and clean. A major Western Ukrainian interwar historical almanac published in Lviv by the "Chervona Kalyna" publishing cooperative—an influential enterprise founded in 1921 by former officers and veterans of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen (USS) and Ukrainian Galician Army (UHA) to document the Ukrainian Revolution and national liberation struggles (1917–1921). Featuring striking constructivist-influenced woodcut cover art by the prominent Ukrainian modernist artist and UNR Army veteran Mykola Butovych (1895–1961), the 1939 edition focuses on Ukrainian diplomatic history, international relations, and military memoirs. The contents integrate documentary essays, analytical surveys, and rare archival photographs provided by the Museum of the Ukrainian Liberation Struggle in Prague (Muzei Vyzvol'noi Borot'by Ukrainy v Prazi), depicting diplomatic missions to Hungary, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Western Europe. Published on the eve of World War II in Polish-ruled Galicia, these annual volumes served as vital repositories of national historical memory prior to the forced liquidation of Chervona Kalyna following the Soviet annexation of Lviv in late 1939.
