V. P. Efanov. Sergo Ordzhonikidze. Supplementary Lithographic Plate Issued with Tvorchestvo Magazine, No. 2, 1938
Item #1621
An original supplementary lithographic plate issued with No. 2 (1938) of the Soviet art journal Tvorchestvo, reproducing Vasilii P. Efanov's celebrated 1936 sanguine portrait of Sergo Ordzhonikidze. Printed in warm reddish-brown tones faithfully imitating the original drawing, the portrait captures one of the Soviet Union's most influential political figures during the final year of his life. The portrait was produced during the final year of Ordzhonikidze's life, at the height of his influence as People's Commissar of Heavy Industry and one of the Soviet Union's leading political figures. He died unexpectedly in February 1937 under circumstances that remain the subject of historical debate during the early years of Stalin's Great Purge. Dimensions: 33.5 × 24.5 cm. Very good. Light overall age toning with minor edge wear, a few small marginal creases and short tears, and tiny losses at the upper and lower right corners, none affecting the image.
Vasilii P. Efanov (1900–1978) was among the foremost official artists of the Stalin era, renowned for his portraits of Soviet political leaders and monumental historical compositions. A People's Artist of the USSR and recipient of multiple Stalin Prizes, Efanov's works are held in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum, and other major public collections.
