Oblong folio (30 × 43 cm) with 10 offset plates after brush drawings by Dieter Masuhr. Edition of 300 copies, numbered 1–300; of these, nos. 1–100 were signed. This copy numbered 177, therefore from the unsigned portion of the edition.

A scarce early artist’s portfolio by German painter, writer, and typographer Dieter Masuhr, issued in Berlin in 1967 in conjunction with his exhibition at Galerie Natubs. The work consists of ten stark black-and-white erotic comic-strip compositions, each arranged as a fragmented sequence of cropped bodies, birds, gestures, and intimate visual fragments. Masuhr’s bold brush line, heavy panel borders, and anti-narrative sequencing place the work at the intersection of erotic drawing, experimental comics, and 1960s German graphic art.

The introductory manuscript text describes the project as “Comic Strips” in which all images “have something to say,” speaking to one another and forming a conversation without beginning or end — “Eigentlich Sonaten.” The ten plates are titled: Er liebt mich; Elefant; Schlittenfahrt; Am Mittag; Besuch; Liebste; Sindbad der Seefahrer; Im Spiegel; Über die Rose; Ma jolie.

A rare and visually arresting limited-edition portfolio, notable as an early German artist’s engagement with the language of comics, sequential imagery, and erotic abstraction.

Condition: Light toning and minor handling wear to sheets; portfolio with expected age wear. Overall very good.
