Frankfurt am Main: Possev, 1949–1987. Item #1563

A substantial, near-continuous run of Grani [Грани], an influential émigré quarterly of Russian literature, art, science, and socio-political thought, comprising 77 issues from 1949 to 1987. Founded in 1946 in the Mönchehof displaced persons camp by representatives of the second wave of Russian emigration, the journal was edited by Evgenii Romanov and published by Possev in Frankfurt am Main. For nearly five decades, Grani served as a vital platform for intellectual and literary freedom, publishing works censored in the Soviet Union and fostering dialogue among the émigré intelligentsia. Grani featured the work of major literary figures such as Anna Akhmatova, Ivan Bunin, Marina Tsvetaeva, Vladimir Nabokov, Boris Pasternak, Georgii Vladimov, Vasilii Grossman, and others. Issue nos. 30–32 (1955–1956), famously published the first Russian translation of George Orwell’s 1984.

Overall in good condition, with earliest issues show heavier wear (chipping, creased or split spines), while issues from the 1970s–1980s are generally well-preserved with minimal structural damage.

Price: $500.00
