[SIGNED] Vahonetky: Poezii = Wagonettes: Poetry
Chicago - New York: 1969. Item #1511
70 pages: portrait. 21 cm. Signed by the author on the title page.
This poetry collection features 51 poems written during a 35-hour train journey from Chicago to New York and back, as the author traveled to a literary and artistic fair in the spring of 1969. According to the author's own introductory note, the title does not refer to industrial coal carts but metaphorically to fleeting poetic thoughts formed “in motion.”
Hanna Cherin (Halyna Ivanivna Hrybinska-Pankiv, b. 1924, Kyiv) was a poet, librarian, and cultural figure of the Ukrainian diaspora. After WWII, she lived in Displaced Persons camps and emigrated to the U.S. in 1950, settling in Chicago. She worked for many years at the University of Chicago Library in the Eastern European Exchange Department and earned two degrees during that time. A leading voice of émigré Ukrainian literature, Cherin authored numerous collections of poetry for both adults and children. Vahonetky stands out for its unique composition process and for offering a poetic record of diasporic movement, both physical and emotional.
