This rare émigré publication gathers a powerful body of documents from August 1973 to February 1974, centered around the publication of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s Arkhipelag GULag in Paris in December 1973 and the resulting crackdown on the author by Soviet authorities. The anthology was compiled in Moscow, circulated via samizdat in March 1974, and presented to Western journalists by Andrei Sakharov and Igor Shafarevich. The volume includes texts by Solzhenitsyn and his defenders, addressing the ideological, cultural, and political persecution of dissent in the USSR. This essay became one of Solzhenitsyn’s most cited political manifestos, offering a moral call to passive resistance through truth.
