Ocherki filosofii narodnichestva = Philosophische Studien [Essays on the Philosophy of Populism]

Berlin: Skify, 1923. Item #1482

157 pages; 17 cm. Original publisher’s printed wrappers. A very good copy with light wear to cover.

First and only edition of a rare émigré philosophical work by Aleksandr Abramovich Shreider (1891–1930), a prominent Socialist Revolutionary (Left SR) and jurist, written during his imprisonment in Butyrka prison following the Left SR uprising of 1918. The essays examine the ideological roots and philosophical underpinnings of Russian populism (narodnichestvo) during a period of profound political upheaval in post-revolutionary Russia. Shreider critiques both Marxist and Narodnik currents, while engaging with the moral and social dilemmas of revolutionary violence and democratic legitimacy.

After fleeing Soviet Russia, Shreider became one of the main intellectual forces behind the émigré publishing house Skify in Berlin. His tragic trajectory—from revolutionary official to imprisoned dissident and finally to exile and suicide in Paris—makes this work a significant document of early post-revolutionary thought.
