Vospominaniia: Izbrannye otryvki = Memoirs
New York, NY: Chalidze Publications, 1979. Item #1474
303 pages; 14 cm. In publisher's printed wrappers. A very good copy with light wear to cover.
First Russian-language edition of selected excerpts from the memoirs of Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev (1894–1971), compiled by émigré publisher Valery Chalidze. As reported by Khrushchev’s son Sergei, the former Soviet leader began dictating his memoirs in 1966, following a period of illness. The transcription work was handled by journalist Lev Petrov, based on Khrushchev’s audio recordings, which were made entirely from memory without any archival sources.
Khrushchev explicitly avoided a conventional chronological autobiography, instead choosing to focus on the most dramatic and historically significant events in which he participated—especially his relationship with Stalin, whose crimes and mistakes he sought to expose. His guiding principle was, in his own words, "One must tell the truth."
