This short Russian-language collection, printed in the immediate aftermath of World War II, is presumed to have been published in a displaced persons (DP) camp in the American zone of occupied Germany. Artur Grebler (b. 1909 in Stanislavov, Austria-Hungary; now Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine) was a Polish-Jewish journalist, theater critic, and writer whose work was interrupted by internment in multiple Nazi concentration camps, including Plaszow, Mauthausen, Melk, and Ebensee. He was liberated in May 1945 by American forces.

This publication marks Grebler’s first appearance in the Russian language. The preface (written by the publisher) introduces the author’s biography and literary background, emphasizing his affinity for Russian culture despite his lack of direct ties to Russia. The book contains two prose works: the titular novella Diana and the shorter piece Zhiznʹ byvaet kovarna... inogda [Life Can Be Treacherous… Sometimes].

Price: $250.00
