[Privately Published] Proishozhdenie Ukrainskago Separatizma [The Origins of Ukrainian Separatism]

New York, NY: 1966. First Edition. Item #1386

278, [10] pages. Text in Russian. A slightly worn copy with small tear on the spine and accessional pencil notes throughout.

A scarce and controversial historical study examining the emergence of Ukrainian separatism from the 17th to the early 20th century. Written by Russian historian Nikolai I. Ulyanov, this work argues that Ukrainian nationalism was not an organic development but a constructed ideological movement positioned against all-Russian identity. The book traces separatist tendencies among the Cossack elite, the revival of Ukrainian identity in the 19th century, and the formation of independence ideology in the early 20th century, particularly in Austrian-controlled territories.

This first edition was privately funded and printed in Madrid, though formally attributed to New York. The text was set in pre-reform Russian orthography, making it stylistically distinctive. Shortly after publication, reports surfaced that a significant portion of the print run was bought up and destroyed, contributing to its rarity. The book remained largely obscure until its reprints in Russia (1996, 2007) reignited academic and political interest.

An essential work for those studying the history of Russian-Ukrainian relations, nationalism, and émigré historiography.
