Frankfurt: Posev, 1977. Item #1385

500 pages. 21cm. Publisher’s hardcover. Very good copy.

A landmark émigré edition of Mikhail Bulgakov’s masterpiece, The Master and Margarita, one of the most important novels of 20th-century Russian literature. Originally published in a heavily censored form in the Soviet journal Moskva (1966–1967), this fourth edition by Posev presents the full, unexpurgated text, restoring all 159 censored passages. The expunged sections from the Soviet magazine version are set in italics, while the editorial and censor-imposed modifications are enclosed in square brackets.

Mikhail Bulgakov (1891–1940) was a renowned Russian writer, playwright, and satirist. Originally trained as a physician, he abandoned medicine in 1920 to pursue literature. His works, including The White Guard, The Fatal Eggs, and Heart of a Dog, were often subject to state censorship. His most famous novel, The Master and Margarita, was written in secret during the last decade of his life and was only published posthumously.

An essential edition for collectors and scholars of Russian literature, Soviet censorship history, and Bulgakov’s literary legacy.
