New York, NY: Chekhov Publishing House, 1954. Item #1384

Volume I: 414, [1] pages; Volume II: 412, [1–2] pages. 22 cm. The books are in fair condition.

A historically significant memoir by Georgy Ivanovich Shavelsky (1871–1951), the last Protopresbyter of the Russian Army and Navy, and a prominent figure in the Russian Orthodox Church. This two-volume work offers an eyewitness account of key events between 1911 and 1920, including World War I, the Russian Revolution, and the subsequent Civil War. As a clergyman closely connected to the Imperial family and the Russian military leadership, Shavelsky provides a unique and deeply personal perspective on the collapse of the Russian Empire and the turmoil that followed.

Prepared for publication in 1943, the memoirs reflect the author’s desire to reveal the true state of pre-revolutionary Russia, its internal struggles, and the causes of its downfall. After emigrating in 1920, Shavelsky became an active member of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad.
