New York, NY: Ukrainian Artists Association in U.S.A., 1958. Item #1339

This scarce exhibition catalog is an important documentation of the mid-20th century Ukrainian émigré artistic movement in the United States. Published to accompany the 1958 exhibition by the Ukrainian Artists Association in America at the Ukrainian Art and Literary Club in New York (March 30–April 19), the catalog features illustrations and descriptions of contemporary Ukrainian book graphics, highlighting the work of leading artists. The exhibit was a pivotal showcase of Ukrainian cultural heritage and its preservation in diaspora, emphasizing illustrations created for children’s literature, covers, and designs, as well as works inspired by traditional Ukrainian motifs.

16 pages: illustrations. 21 cm. Text in Ukrainian. The catalog is in very good condition, with clean pages and crisp, black-and-white illustrations. The cover, adorned with a woodcut-style design by Mykhailo Olynianska-Stefanovych titled “Bila krynytsia” (The White Well), shows minimal wear, with only minor edge creasing typical of ephemeral materials from this period. The catalog details twenty-four participating artists, including Jacques Hnizdovsky, Edward Kozak, Okhrim Sudomora, Wasyl Masjutin, Mykola Butovych, Myron Levytsky, Boris Kriukov, Pavlo Kovzhun, among others, and provides a glimpse into the creative process and aesthetic sensibilities of Ukrainian book art. An invaluable resource for researchers of Ukrainian art and émigré culture. Rare.
