Ivan Bahrianyi (1906–1963), born Ivan Pavlovych Lozoviaha, was a prominent Ukrainian writer, essayist, and political figure. He was arrested in 1932 for alleged "counter-revolutionary propaganda" and spent years in Soviet labor camps before resuming his literary work. Drawing on his experiences, Bahrianyi wrote notable works such as "The Tiger Trappers" (1944) and "Garden of Gethsemane" (1950). During World War II, he joined the Ukrainian nationalist underground and later relocated to Germany, where he continued his political and literary activities. In 1948, Bahrianyi founded the Ukrainian Revolutionary Democratic Party and edited the newspaper "Ukrains'ki visti" until his death. His pamphlet "Why I am not going back to the Soviet Union?" voiced his opposition to Soviet rule. Posthumously awarded the Shevchenko Prize in 1992, Bahrianyi remains a significant figure in Ukrainian literature and politics.
