Gogol's seminal collection of short stories, published in a displaced persons camp after World War II, which laid the foundation for his distinctive literary style.

Following WWII, Russian DPs in Europe established a significant publishing tradition within refugee camps. Despite material scarcity and military censorship, they produced rare publications that now serve as important cultural and historical artifacts.

As of October 2024, OCLC locates three institutional copies of the book in North America.
