Joseph L. Lichten (1906–1987) was a Polish-American lawyer and diplomat known for advancing Catholic-Jewish relations. Born Józef Lichtensztul in Poland, he earned a Doctor of Law from the University of Warsaw and a PhD in Catholic canon law. After serving the Polish government in exile during WWII, he became a U.S. citizen. Lichten played a key role in interfaith dialogue, organizing numerous conferences for the Anti-Defamation League and defending Pope Pius XII’s wartime actions. In 1986, Pope John Paul II honored him as the first American Jew to be named a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Gregory the Great.
