Portrait of Ivan Betskoy (1704 – 1795)

Paris: 1760. Roslin, Alexander. Item #79

Engraving portrait of Ivan Betskoy titled in French at the bottom (Lieutenant General des Armees, Chambellan actuel de sa Majeste Imperiale de toute les Russies, Directeur General des Batimens et Jardins, President de l’Academie des Arts, Premier Curateur de la maison des Enfans Trouves Chevalier des ordes de Saint Alexandre Newsky et de Sainte Anne), measuring 545 x 385 mm [plate size]. Engraver: Nicolas Dupuis. Artist: Alexander Roslin. Hand-cast paper, verging, with watermarks. First pressing ("Newsky" without error). Foxing. Very rare.

The engraving was described by D. Rovinsky. He noted especially that the book collector Lobanov-Rostovsky only in 1881 managed to acquire a portrait in the second pressing.

Ivan Ivanovich Betskoy (1704 – 1795) was a Russian school reformer who served as Catherine II's advisor on education and President of the Imperial Academy of Arts for thirty years (1764–94). Perhaps the crowning achievement of his long career was the establishment of Russia's first unified system of public education. Betskoy's parents were Prince Ivan Trubetskoy, a Russian Field Marshal, and his Swedish mistress, Baroness Wrede. His surname is the abbreviated form of his father's.
