Nicholas I (Russian: Николай I Павлович; 6 July [O.S. 25 June] 1796 – 2 March [O.S. 18 February] 1855) was a prominent Russian monarch who ruled as Emperor of Russia from 1825 to 1855, while also serving as the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Finland. He was known for his conservative political views, and his reign was characterized by geographical expansion, repression of dissent, economic stagnation, poor administrative policies, and a corrupt bureaucracy. He was involved in many wars, including the Crimean War, which ended in defeat for Russia and had disastrous effects on the empire's finances. Despite his shortcomings, Nicholas I was also known for his determination, iron will, sense of duty, and dedication to hard work. He believed in Russian nationalism, and his reign was marked by an "Official Nationality" ideology based on orthodoxy in religion and autocracy in government. While he was victorious in ending the Russo-Persian War and the Russo-Turkish War, his micromanagement hindered his generals, and his misguided strategy resulted in a failure of domestic and foreign policy. On the eve of his death, the Russian Empire had reached its geographical zenith but was in dire need of reform.
